Delhi Assembly Polls 2025: A Tough Battlefield for AAP and BJP

The political landscape in Delhi has transformed significantly since Arvind Kejriwal emerged as the torchbearer of the anti-corruption movement in 2011. Once a symbol of hope and integrity, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader faces the most challenging election of his political career. With the BJP intensifying its efforts to regain power in Delhi after 27 years, the 2025 assembly elections have become a critical battleground.

AAP: From Activism to Accountability:

Kejriwal’s political journey has been remarkable rising from a grassroots activist to a three-term chief minister. However, the promises of accountability and transparency that marked AAP’s beginnings now form the crux of BJP’s offensive. Corruption allegations, particularly in the Delhi excise policy case, have cast a shadow over Kejriwal’s credibility. With both Kejriwal and his close aide Manish Sisodia facing legal challenges, AAP’s campaign narrative has shifted from governance to damage control. To counter growing anti-incumbency, AAP has taken a bold step by replacing several sitting MLAs with new faces, including turncoats and second-rung leaders. Yet, the focus remains firmly on Kejriwal, with the party projecting him as its sole leader, despite Atishi currently holding the reins as chief minister in a “placeholder” capacity.

 BJP: Strategic Realignment:

The BJP, buoyed by its recent successes in state elections, is determined to end its political exile in Delhi. Unlike its previous campaigns, which relied heavily on aggressive rhetoric, the BJP has adopted a more calculated approach this time. By focusing on local issues such as poor infrastructure, inadequate amenities in slums, and the controversial liquor policy, the BJP aims to erode AAP’s support base in key constituencies. The party has also activated its grassroots network, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadres, to mobilize voters in unauthorized colonies and JJ clusters. High-profile candidates such as Ramesh Bidhuri, Parvesh Verma, and Arvinder Singh Lovely signify the BJP’s intent to field a strong, credible lineup. The BJP has also refrained from announcing a chief ministerial candidate, countering AAP’s “Kejriwal vs None” narrative and focusing on collective leadership.

Congress: A Silent Contender?

While the Congress remains a distant third, its role as a potential spoiler cannot be ignored. Historically, AAP has benefitted from Congress’s decline, capturing its traditional vote bank among minorities and lower-income groups. However, the BJP is subtly encouraging Congress’s resurgence in Muslim-dominated areas to split the anti-BJP vote. This tactical manoeuver could significantly impact AAP’s prospects in a closely contested election.

Voter Sentiment- A Shifting Landscape :

In 2020, AAP’s sweeping victory was driven by its emphasis on education, healthcare, and pro-poor policies. However, the middle class, once a stronghold for AAP, appears disillusioned by allegations of extravagance and inefficiency. BJP’s narrative, highlighting Kejriwal’s “luxurious” lifestyle and perceived governance failures, aims to capitalize on this disenchantment. Moreover, the BJP’s focus on the liquor policy has resonated with women in lower-middle-class neighborhoods, further complicating AAP’s outreach. On the other hand, AAP continues to showcase its achievements, such as improved government schools and health facilities, as evidence of its commitment to development.

The Road Ahead Both AAP and BJP face significant challenges :

For AAP, overcoming anti-incumbency and re-establishing Kejriwal’s image as a reformer are critical. The BJP, despite its organizational strength, must bridge the wide gap in vote share to convert its efforts into electoral success. As February 8 approaches, the Delhi electorate stands at a crossroads, torn between continuity and change. Will Kejriwal’s charisma and developmental claims outweigh the BJP’s aggressive campaign against him? Or will Delhi witness the saffron party’s long-awaited return to power? This election is not just a contest for governance but a referendum on the promises, perceptions, and politics of the past decade. With high stakes and intense rivalries, the results are set to redefine Delhi’s political future.
